Our current economic system is trapped in a flawed theory of separation, scarcity, and competition. Yet, as Einstein said: “Theory determines what we are able to see.” So we allow it to define our lives.

For former investment banker John Fullerton it has become a life purpose to pursue ways to embody a new theory – a systemic approach that makes life itself the center of our understanding. A fundamental change in how we view institutions and individuals: To see life as interdependent nodes in one interconnected system rather than as isolated entities.

Regenerative economics provides a principles-based, theoretical foundation for redesigning economies to meet unprecedented demands. By introducing principles of living systems as the foundation for our current economics, the Greek “oikinomia” – literally the management of the household – takes on an essential new meaning.

With new clarity and vision, we begin to understand how the many institutions that make up our economy – from small businesses to multinational corporations, from banks to pension funds, from central banks to state actors – all can and must operate for the benefit and good of the whole, just as it works in life itself.
But institutions are made up of people and it is people who must feel called and empowered to change the system. A true call for change does clearly not just happen - so how do we facilitate and hold space for the internal transformation that needs to take place to embody this change towards a more holistic world view?

And how do we learn to work and thrive with complexity and holism, which is so new to us in a world full of simple metrics, KPIs and benchmarks?.

How do we bring transformation into the financial institutions whose actions so dominate the nature and outcomes of our economies?

These and other questions will be explored in a conversation between John Fullerton and Silja Nyboe Andersen.
